Woody biomass gasification and co-generation system

This is Japan's first co-generation system that incorporates a gas engine generator. The system uses gasification technology that converts woodchips into gas in a multi-retort kiln, which is supplied with heat externally, and changes the quality of the gasified woodchips into clean gas as a result of partial combustion with oxygen added.
This system enables the effective use of woody biomass energy and makes it possible to reduce the discharged amount of carbon dioxide as one of the factors of global warming.

Features of System

  1. Efficient thermal decomposition and gasification
The system performs indirect heating for gasification in Chugai Ro's time-proven multi-retort kiln, which is supplied with heat externally, thus performing the thermal decomposition and gasification of woody biomass and efficiently extracting flammable gas from the materials while suppressing the generation of CO2 and N2.
  2. Efficient electric power recovery
The system efficiently obtains electric power from the high-efficiency gas engine generator fueled by the high-calorie flammable gas obtained from gasification.
  3. Recovery of thermal energy
Furthermore, the exhaust heat recovery of the system makes it possible to provide steam and hot water. About 50% of the energy of woody biomass is collected as electric power and thermal energy.
  4. Gas reforming tower for tar removal
Flammable gas generated from the gasification furnace contains tar, which has a negative effect on engines on downstream. The gas reforming tower provides the high-temperature flammable gas with a minute amount of oxygen, thus increasing the temperature of the gas to 1,100C and changing the tar into flammable gas.
  5. Enables effective use of by-products
The system makes optimum use of the energy stored in woody biomass. For example, at the time of gasification, a small amount of carbon-containing residue (char) is generated. This residue is burned and used as gasification fuel. Furthermore, the minute amount of remnant ash after combustion, which contains minerals that are beneficial for growing vegetables, can be returned to forests and farmland.
